The Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci, recognized as a Museum of contemporary art in Tuscany, is the first Italian museum to have a facility that was built ex novo from the ground up. Its function is to present, collect, document and disseminate the most advanced developments in artistic research for painting, sculpture, installation, architecture, design, fashion, photography, video, film, publishing, theatre, dance, performance, and music.
Its collection consists of over a thousand works and projects that represent 25 years of exhibition activity and research, including the trends and developments in artistic idioms and media from the second half of the twentieth century to the present, in Italy and in the world. The collection serves to give continuity to the cultural history of a region, Tuscany, universally recognized and regarded as being extraordinary for its historical and artistic heritage in architecture, landscape, language, music, science and design.
Around the building designed in the eighties by the Florentine architect Italo Gamberini (1907-1990), a leading figure of the rationalist movement in Tuscany, an ambitious project is in progress, a circular extension commissioned by the Pecci family from the NIO architecten in Rotterdam, who have designed some of the most interesting projects on the innovative Dutch architectural scene.
The new building is supported by the Municipality of Prato and the Tuscany Region. Connected to the Gamberini building, the new headquarters is upgrading its public Museum services in order to present the collection more organically, and to enhance the Centre’s visibility, accessibility and flexibility.
